Overview

Cleary Gottlieb is a pioneer in globalizing the legal profession. We have 14 offices in major financial centers around the world, but we operate as a single, integrated global partnership and not as a U.S. firm with a network of overseas locations. The firm employs approximately 1,100 lawyers from more than 50 countries.

Since 1946 our lawyers and staff have worked across practices, industries, jurisdictions, and continents to provide clients with simple, actionable approaches to their most complex legal and business challenges, whether domestic or international. We support every client relationship with intellectual agility, commercial acumen, and a human touch.

The Conflicts Specialist will support the Firm’s global conflicts and new business intake function by conducting conflicts searches, analyzing results, researching corporate relationships, and assisting with the clearance of new clients, new matters, lateral hires, and other intake requests. This role requires strong judgment, excellent research skills, attention to detail, and the ability to work effectively with lawyers, Conflicts Attorneys, the Office of General Counsel, and professional staff across offices and time zones.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct and review conflicts searches for new clients, new matters, lateral hires, pitches, and other business intake requests.
  • Analyze conflicts search results and provide clear assessments of potential legal, ethical, commercial, and business conflicts.
  • Work with Conflicts Attorneys and the Office of General Counsel to determine whether conflicts of interest exist and assist in resolving identified issues.
  • Research relevant parties, affiliates, parent companies, subsidiaries, shareholders, portfolio companies, and other related entities using online databases, company websites, public and private databases, and other research tools.
  • Assist in reviewing business relationships for disclosure and conflicts clearance purposes.
  • Maintain accurate and comprehensive records in the Firm’s conflicts databases and intake systems.
  • Investigate and resolve erroneous, outdated, incomplete, or inconsistent data in conflicts submissions, reports, and records.
  • Support process, data quality, and technology improvements to strengthen the conflicts check process.
  • Serve as a resource to lawyers and professional staff regarding conflicts procedures, systems, submissions, and matter opening requirements.
  • Mentor and train new conflicts team members using prescribed training materials and tools.
  • Stay current on best practices and developments relating to conflicts of interest, legal ethics, and law firm risk management.
  • Be available for occasional overtime during evenings, weekends, and holidays as business needs require.

Qualifications

  • Minimum 2 years of conflicts experience in an international law firm.
  • Familiarity with automated conflict checking systems used in a law firm setting preferred.
  • Strong understanding of conflicts analysis, new business intake, ethical obligations, and risk management procedures.
  • Highly developed business research skills using online databases, the Internet, print sources, public and private databases, and other tools.
  • Understanding of complex business relationships in a global economic environment.
  • Ability to maintain complex computerized records and learn new software, systems, and research tools quickly.
  • Proficiency with word processing systems, spreadsheets, databases, and related business applications.
  • Strong interpersonal skills, with the ability to build effective working relationships with lawyers, administrative and support staff, accounting, Conflicts Attorneys, Operations, and the Office of General Counsel.
  • Excellent communication, organizational, time management, and prioritization skills.
  • Ability to work well under pressure, manage multiple tasks, and exercise sound judgment with confidential information.
  • Willingness to work a flexible schedule and overtime as needed.
  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent professional experience preferred.

The estimated base salary range for this position is $100,000 to $110,000 at the time of posting. The actual salary offered will depend on a variety of job-related factors, including skills, education, training, credentials, experience, scope and complexity of role responsibilities, geographic location, and performance. This role is exempt meaning it is not overtime pay eligible.
