Overview

The Attorney Development Manager is responsible for overseeing a broad range of talent initiatives for the firm’s US litigation practice.  This includes engaging the department’s Practice Group Leaders and Staffing and Talent partners, in developing the firm’s attorneys to their highest potential, partnering with the Diversity, Equity & Inclusion Team to ensure senior leadership accountability for a diverse talent pipeline, overseeing a robust performance review process, participating in strategic workforce planning, and partnering with other Talent teams on critical initiatives.   

Responsibilities

Key Responsibilities

  • Consult with Litigation practice group leaders and partners to understand business goals and propose, support and implement initiatives and strategies to achieve those goals through the holistic development of associate talent.   
  • Meet with associates individually to coach, advise and support them in their role, particularly with respect to professional development, productivity, interpersonal dynamics and well-being.
  • Collaborate with the litigation staffing function to provide insights to associate developmental goals, productivity and capacity in furtherance of attorney development, practice group business goals and equitable distribution of work. This includes providing staffing support or coverage as needed.
  • Track, aggregate and analyze attorney metrics, including capacity information and utilization rates, to support the practice group leaders and partners to achieve the practice group’s business goals.
  • Implement all associate evaluation processes for the litigation group. Independently consult with partners about associate evaluations, and identify and propose effective strategies concerning associate performance.
  • Partner with practice group leaders and other partners to ensure attorneys are receiving clear and actionable feedback and engaging in clear objective setting for performance management.
  • Meet with associates individually to develop individual development plans to achieve their professional goals.
  • Collaborate with the Director of Attorney Development to strategically evaluate, innovate, and adapt Talent development initiatives for effective implementation in the Litigation practice group.
  • Help to embed within each practice group Talent strategies designed to support the professional success and well-being of associates, including mentoring relationships, training programs, and coaching.
  • Ensure that the professional development needs of attorneys from historically underrepresented groups, women, and those on reduced schedules are being addressed.
  • Plan, prepare and present quarterly briefings to partners on the status of associate development and practice group / US-wide Talent initiatives.
  • Collaborate with practice group leaders and various committees to plan for future workforce needs, capacity projections and target planning.

 

General

  • Liaise with the Attorney Development team, partners and various committees.
  • Extensive reporting, analysis, and presentation of data to be utilized for presentation to practice group leaders.
  • Provide perspectives and recommendations based on professional expertise to practice group leaders so that decision-making is more efficient and progress is assured.
  • Spearhead innovation with respect to the maintenance and utilization of associate data to promote associate development.
  • Stay apprised of developments in other practice groups and across the firm to distill what may be important/useful to the practice group leaders.
  • General ad hoc projects as needed.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree required. Juris Doctor degree preferred.
  • At least 3 years of relevant law firm experience with significant experience in the litigation practice area.
  • Experience influencing and working closely with executive-level leaders.
  • Ability to develop effective partnerships across disparate groups, to organize and facilitate decisions and ensure implementation, as well as address complex issues.
  • Sound judgment and ability to respect, protect and maintain highly confidential and sensitive information.
  • Ability to work strategically and collaboratively, while grasping larger concepts and minor details.
  • Impeccable managerial, organizational and interpersonal skills.
  • Exceptional written, presentation and verbal communication skills.
  • Reasonable level of financial literacy and numeracy, and comfort analyzing data/metrics.
  • Ability to toggle between, and establish priorities among, competing work streams and deliver results with a sense of urgency and on deadline.
  • Advanced proficiency of Microsoft Office Suite, knowledge of viDesktop is a plus.
  • Professional and positive demeanor; positive, solution oriented, self-starter.
  • Flexibility to work outside regular business hours, including early mornings, evenings and weekends as needed.

 

The estimated base salary for this position is $175,000 to $200,000 at the time of posting. The actual salary offered will depend on a variety of job-related factors, including skills, education, training, credentials, experience, scope and complexity of role responsibilities, geographic location, and performance. This role is exempt meaning it is not overtime pay eligible.
