    We seek a dynamic Client Accounting Manager (Billing Manager) to manage all aspects of the client billing and collections functions for the Washington Office and lead our client accounting team. Requiring constant and close communication with clients, lawyers, and partners, including members of the Finance and Billing Committee, the Client Accounting Manager advises on the firm's billing practices, provides reports and data analysis, and handles the firm's most sophisticated and complex billing. Working closely with the Finance Director, the Client Accounting Manager also establishes financial policies, procedures, controls, and reporting systems for Cleary Gottlieb’s Washington, D.C. office and acts as a proxy for the Finance Director for both client accounting and more broad finance matters as needed.


    Successful candidates will have significant law firm billing expertise, a methodical and detail-oriented approach, excellent technical skills, superior written and verbal communication skills, the ability to build and leverage effective working relationships, and strong leadership to drive the success of the client accounting staff and overall function. This position requires a committed and flexible professional willing to work extra hours, under time pressure, as needed and travel to the firm's New York Office for training or financial meetings.

    Supervises: Client Accounting Staff


    • Supervises and trains Client Accounting staff by hiring and training team members, providing new staff members with a copy of Partner’s Billing Manual and Billing Manual, ensuring that new staff read and understand materials in both manuals, monitoring work for compliance to firm policies and procedures, counseling staff, and providing performance feedback through on-going training, meetings, and the formal review process
    • Monitors and manages the implementation of billing arrangements and cost exceptions by working with the team to ensure negotiated rates and cost exceptions are consistent with billing arrangement and all aspects of client’s bill are consistent with Outside Counsel Guidelines as well as coordinating with various teams in NY Finance and Professional Responsibility to ensure matter intake and financial systems are updated with accurate information
    • Coordinates assignments and workflow so that lawyers receive the appropriate level of billing support; this includes developing and cross training team in a variety of billing styles, authorizing overtime within the billing department to meet deadlines and for priority assignments requiring quick turnaround, monitoring work product of staff to ensure bill preparation and drafting is timely and accurate and that all billing-related work adheres to firm standards as well as taking steps throughout the billing cycle to minimize the demand on resources at month end and year end
    • Oversees all aspects of e-billing including ensuring that electronic bills are submitted promptly and in accordance with client’s guidelines and requirements, monitoring activity to make sure rejected invoices are re-submitted timely, working with the team to investigate reasons for reduced invoices resulting in short pays, and supervising the appeal process
    • Monitors and corrects billing problems and delays by following the billing process to ensure timely and accurate delivery of client bills and developing strategies to minimize frequency of common problems such as late time, mischarged time, split diaries, vague or inadequate diary description, lack of compliance with client billing guidelines, stale drafts, etc.
    • Generates reports and conducts data analysis on key financial data for the Administrative Director, Administrative Partners, and Finance and Billing Committee Partners upon request
    • Manages collections by providing partners and Finance Committee members with aged accounts receivable information and ensuring client accounting team and cash receipts team follow up on unpaid invoices sending routine reminders to clients and escalating issues as needed
    • Other responsibilities and duties as assigned


    • Bachelor’s degree, preferably in Accounting or Finance
    • Minimum of five (5) years of legal billing experience in an Elite or Aderant environment
    • Minmum of three (3) years of electronic billing experience
    • Supervisory experience
    • Strong oral and written communication skills, including the ability to communicate effectively with all levels of personnel with tact and diplomacy
    • Superior organizational and time management skills
    • Superior attention to detail
    • Flexiblity to work long hours to meet monthly and annual deadlines and the ablity to travel (currently, <15%)
